All staff researchers and students must also be familiar and comply with the university's Safety in Laboratories Policy and Disposal of Hazardous Medical Waste Policy. Curtin University is committed to ensuring that hazardous management systems are in place in order to meet legislative requirements and assist with the provision of a safe working environment for staff students and visitors.

Pregnancy and Hazardous Substances

Pregnant women should take extra precautions when dealing with the hazardous substances encountered in laboratories.   They are encouraged to discuss the situation with their supervisor so that safe alternative work arrangements can be made. Laboratory Safety Standards Australia

The Australian/New Zealand Standards series 2243 pertain to safety in laboratories and include the following parts:

1. General safety
2. Chemical aspects
3. Microbiology
4. Ionizing radiations
5. Non-Ionizing radiations
6. Mechanical aspects
7. Electrical aspects
8. Fume cupboards
9. Recirculating fume cupboards
10. Storage of Chemicals
