Use of Radioactive Materials or Devices that Generate Radiation

All staff are reminded that there are regulations which must be observed by those who use radioactive materials or devices that generate radiation. Some of the important points that should be noted are:

  1. All devices emitting radiation must be registered. Examples are lasers, transilluminators, x-ray machines and radiation gauges. Consumer items such as microwave ovens and CD players are exempt from this requirement.
  2. All premises involved with the radiation work must be registered.
  3. Any acquisition or use of radioactive materials must be reported to the RSO.
  4. Any projects which involve the use of radiation or radioactive materials must obtain clearance from the Radiation Safety Office.
  5. All personnel who use radiation in their work must be registered with the Radiation Safety Office.
  6. All personnel who use radiation in their work must ensure that their monitoring equipment is maintained and regularly calibrated.
  7. All licensees must ensure that they hold a valid licence.

Radiation Safety Committee

Meets twice a year. Agenda items should be sent to the RSO.

Role of Radiation Safety Committee

The role of the Radiation Safety Committee is:

  • To oversee all work within the University which utilises ionising and non-ionising radiation to comply with regulations made under the Radiation Safety Act 1983;
  • To approve all purchases of radioisotopes and irradiating equipment and location of such equipment;
  • To provide a point of reference and referral in all matters related to radiation safety.

University Radioactive Waste Store (308-152)

A radioactive waste store has been built to cater for material no longer required but is still radioactive. The main function of the store is to house unsealed radioactive waste which will decay to a safe level in several months thus enabling disposal by conventional means.

Only authorised staff are allowed to place radioactive waste in the store. All waste placed in the store must be logged.

The store has not been designed to house long half material still required for experiments and research.
